Bugs and insects usually give us the creeps and we are mostly disgusted by them, but on a close-up view, some are really amazing creatures and if we take time to observe details we might find some of them... quite cute or fascinating. Your goal in this contest is to model such a 3D insect, as detailed as possible. The work on the eyes and junction points can be quite a challenge, but you must get creative and have fun! Good luck!
Awesome awesome awesome! The only thing I could say is that the material is a bit reflective so it looks a bit like plastic. Maybe bring down the refraction/reflection.
Thanks guys .
I have adjusted the shadow a bit - (removed lower light source and changed from buffered shadows to ray shadows). I hope they look better now.
I set the specularity and its hardness really high because the ladybeetles in my reference photos are actually really shiny when the sun is on them.
I have just added some subsurface scattering to the shell.
You have an incredible sense of color which help you enorm. I have to work twice or more for a mediocre result. How much do you want to share this secret with me ?
Reflections are still to strong IMO. Your program ( you still work in Bryce ? ) have for sure settings for specular light or highlight, play with.
Your work is too good to not be perfect.
I gave up on Bryce ages ago, currently using Blender.
Ok, I've decreased the specular a bit. I also just added a bit of reflection in the eye using HDRi image (top middle image of source).
Great work author...I like bug very much, great details and perfect for,.Just one nit pick, adjust shadow just a bit. With this lighting shadow is to much sharp and dark, lover the opacity of shadow and blur the edges just a bit...Any how, high marks from me...Good luck

thanks erathion, I have changed spot light into area light.
nice job.. the crab's body details is very well done... I will suggest you to make something like that for the chelipeds (the claws) too . because it is the focusing part of this bug.... good luck...
Making of wing veins with â€create shape†is a great tip. I' m looking since a long time for such an idea.I think i shall modifie the edges with â€Topology†presets. Hope you dont mind if i shall use this tip very soon . Good luck, excellent work
A good effort, though I think you are good enough to improve this dragon fly a lot.
If you have a look at some reference images (sxc has 424 dragonfly pictures) you can see that the tops of the legs are positioned much closer together, and the tails are split into several segments.
Perhaps if you also made the background green instead of red and positioned the dragonfly on a stick it would look even better.
All the best.
wow... so beautiful...
i'm with lamantine on this one
The shadows seem a bit off.. but the actual insect is very well made. Good luck!
