Model a boat with as much detail as possible, any kind of boat will do. No pre-built meshes are allowed, and as always, a step by step guide is mandatory.
Mad: This is specid=fically a boat and not a ship I'm assuming? ( 5 years and 3340 days ago )
Mad: Sorry, I meant specifically...we can't make ships can we? ( 5 years and 3340 days ago )
Contest Moderator: I don't see why not. A ship is technically a boat. ( 5 years and 3338 days ago )
Mad: Thank you for clarifying mod. ( 5 years and 3337 days ago )
kyricom: a boat will fit on a ship, but a ship will not fit on a boat ( 5 years and 3334 days ago )
MnMCarta: When I was a kid and if I said "Sh*t" my brother or sister would tell on me and I'd say to mom and dad..."I didn't say that! I said SHIP and a ship is a boat!"
Only worked a couple of times before they caught on...hehehehe ( 5 years and 3329 days ago )
Contest Moderator: You bad girl Mncarta ! lol. ( 5 years and 3329 days ago )
Howdie stranger! If you want to participate in this contest, just:
The lighting is just fab on the boat and makes it look so realistic! Looks like something from Pirates of the Caribbean! Only thing is IMHO, that shadow under the boat is too strong and maybe could be a bit more transparent.. But hey that's just my opinion. GL! Still instant fav from me
Agree with Toothpick about shadow and I also think you should have a reflection of the canoe in the water. The chrome too does look just a little bit too shiny in hi res.
Fantastic entry author...i don't know that much about 3d but this is one amazing and very effective creation...Love how u managed to merge all elements in one great realistic image...Well done author and i wish u best of luck
It’s a nice image, textures and composition are great but the shadows are personally a little wrong, if you refer back to your background this what I see…..light source has been changed to midday sun 12 -1 o-clock/the now more visible patch of shadow in the background is from right to left not like the shadows on the boat which are the left to right, so the front face of the boat should have more of a graduated shadow like at the back end. But still a very cool scene and a shame the S.B.S don’t show the work put in to achieve the end result.
Agree about the few details like reflection, it's a bit flat on the left side, but the two woods and construction are very nice. I like that you included oars, they're beautiful (though the ends look a bit large to grip), reminds me of my sculling days.
Very nice work author...look like creation for some nice adventurous game...GL

Nice atmospheric image could do with a Higher AA samples setting which would significantly reduce the graininess and noisiness of the render. But if you don’t want to do this you could try increasing light samples or a more traditional sampling method (brute force GI) may prove a better solution.
As a general rule, objects should also have wall thickness to prevent some of the artifact issues with rendering.
Author, the final look is indeed good but the contest is basically about the boat and this is the one thing you haven't demonstrated in your SBS. If you have made it with lines, then please show the stages since I myself have tried to model a paper boat from lines-it may look simple, but I know from that experience that it's far from easy. Hope to see that soon I'll reserve my vote till then.
Really nice 3d work, but the shadow on the left is way too dark. Ambient lighting as well as water reflections wouldn't have that cute boat dropping off into such darkness. Lighten it up a bit, and you have a great image!

Thanks MossyB, but we're past the deadline for this contest so I can't really do much about it. Although I was trying to create a wet paper look for the bottom, I didn't get the time to do it on this image. But I think the shadows kinda give the impression of wet paper as it is now.

It’s a cool idea and a nice image but dose not really fall in the (Model a boat with as much detail as possible Category) couple things for future reference or consideration
white light ( if there is such a thing) consist of the three primary colors red, green and blue so if “white light†is shining on your boat, then it is most likely to absorbs the blue light and green and red is reflected giving the boat a yellow tint more so in with the chosen background, plus you should see a little transparency as well.

Thanks Warlock.
With the daylight system, the color of the sun (light) changes colors automaticly and with the settings I used, the light had a yellow/orange tint. So if you open the image in photoshop you can see that the white color on the boat does have more yellowish color than the others. The outside of the boat also gets colors from the water.
Also, the contest also says "any kind of boat will do", which should include this paper boat inside the contest rules.

So it dose….bit contradictory would you say. What I will add is don’t completely rely on your application to do it for you, there will be times when it will not get it right, always good to have a sound knowledge base.
Hope the SBS is on it's way...? Would prefer to vote after seeing that.

This is quite FAB
The wood looks great, but whats going on with the things where the oars go, the chrome looks awful imo.

nice job
very good
i take it your advice guys......thx!...or just some parts from your advice!
I doubt there's chrome on the old rowboat.
More likely it's iron...Which would look weathered...

RE: more realistic attempt!!!!
