Added another step, quickly pulled it apart, just to show there is know doubt that I only used 20 cubes/blocks. Some of the cubes have blue and white materials added to them give the Illusion that there is more than there really is……
Cool idea and a nice clean render shame about the stretching of the images which is a bit distracting
By adding a checker texture to your UV map, you can keep it on and unwrap/relax the UV as you go. Relaxing the UV isn't always needed, if you have no distortion or pinching. Most of the times you have to go in there and manually move vertices around to kill the distortion. UV unwrap and Relax, can only take you 80% of the way the rest you'll have to
do manually.
At the end of the day the basic key to texturing is to try to make sure your polygons are most equal in size (quads) and the more square the checker patterns has the less distortion you will have.

9+9+9... minus 1 (the center cube technically doesn't exist, it's a gear that all the other cubes ride over) so 26
Unless you want to say each cube is an 8.. (your additional indentions give existence to them) so that would be 8X26... 206 (216 if you count the center cube)
Great creativity, cool overall image, the composition could have been a little better tho(would have like to see a little more of the plane) I don’t know how this works in MR. but if you are rendering large water planes with displacement always remove ever thing outside of the cameras F.O.V. this will improve render times and ram used.
nice and realistic
this is one of the best in this contest and very different
Beautiful work! Best of luck!
