3ds Max with mental ray rendering. Mental ray Arch. Design material (glass) for shell casing. This tutorial was inspirational: http://adobeusersite.com/photoshop-blog/3d-max-tutorials/3dsmax-3dmodel-shotgun-shell-studio-tutorial (5 years and 3674 days ago)
I like the idea, but not the choice of background colors. It also looks blurry and like it's suffering of some sort of heavy jpeg-compression. Many of earlier 3DS Max renders on this site tends to do that. I haven't been able to convert to 3DS Max yet, so I don't know why, but there has to be some really simple mental ray setting to avoid that (I bet someone has a good answer for that?).
love this.gl.
i did not know you did 3d. congrat somemore you are da man!!!
Congrats :P

I made this swirly ball using this tutorial:http://blendermama.com/twirly-sphere-modelling.html
I made a pillar out of a cylindar and flattened cubes, stacked.
Made adjustments to the ball in Ray Mirror and Ray Transparency. Changed the colors of the world.
Placed the default light inside of the ball. Added a sun lamp, colored it yellow and increased the intensity to 1.58.
Added marble texture and made adjustments to the texture on the base. Added color. (5 years and 3681 days ago)
Nice!
Congrats for your first place, Downofthedragon!
Thank you Lelaina. I don't really think it's fair because apparently I'm the only one using blender on this site. But with only 3 entries everyone got top places!

This has actually been my desktop background for the last couple of days, it might not be the most complex of 3D models but I love it, I find it beautiful. It took 2 hours to render.
The 3D software is Cinema4D. (5 years and 3714 days ago)
I like this image a lot. What renderer did you use?
Just the standard render that comes with C4D it is not a choice.
Sure, really simple and all that. But I can't help to like the abstract pattern.
However, it looks photoshoped with a black background. Glass always looks better with natural surrounding to refract and reflect (not only a background image though).
Even though its abstract, it looks very life-like; like a pretty jellyfish. Love it!

Interesting idea, i think that reflection is a bit too harsh and opaque though. Good luck!

The detailed model looks good. I also like the colored glass. You could of course add small variations to different channels to make it look slightly worn and thus more realistic. Also, the specularity makes it look more like plastic glass. Easy things to fix though.
But just like another entry in this contest you've excluded one of the more vital parts of transparency - background and surrounding objects. It's not really coming to life with this setup. I can see that it reflects some kind of image, but there's no trace of it in the image.
I think it looks marvelous just the way it is Good work!
Excellent job
