Yes, the tree is basically only one branch, but every branch is modified by the axis and scaled.
When it comes to the DOF background... Personally I'm not fan of background images. Sometimes a cool background image makes the impact of the vote result and in my opinion, that's not entirely honest. So I make my own, even if its a lot of work just to make a small detail. After all, that's whats 3d modeling is all about
