I really like the modeling here, nice work. I'm interested in the render engine you used? It looks like mental ray? Or perhaps Vray sun? But really good modeling

A lot of work here and definitely not in vain.. very nice image and textures. (And a good SBS too). I would love to see some trees or street view or something behind the fence, but it's just a minor detail really... add a flower to the vase(s) and a candle or bulb inside the lamps and I'm all sold. (Well, I am already..) Great job, author..

Some pretty nice modeling but to me it looks as tho you have used the same texture for 85% of the image?

author says:

thanks warlock......
well in flower pot i did some variation in texture and, the light poll, fence and tiny models are textured with default max texture..... but rest of the texture are painted.....

Checkmate - Fallen King - created by Plastic

Checkmate - Fallen King
Favs: 0SBS: 2Hi-resRank: 3/3Score: 55.3% (25)14869 views

Made completely from scratch. The model was made in 3ds Max. Used the lathe modifier on the king's shape, nothing advances, you can find countless tutorials about how to do this. For lighting I used a b&w HDR image. (5 years and 3474 days ago)

I'm repeating myself here.. but 90% of the pictures need a proper background.. and this is one of them. Make a nice, clean and colorful chessboard and this will look so much better. You can also show your skills with the board. The piece itself is very clean and nicely done.

no avatar
Widiar says:

(Well, any kind of background. Be it a table, a satin cushion, some clothing or anything else..)

author says:

I'm satisfied about my background. As the contest moderator said it should look like a real macro shot. I used a "digital white box" for my background just like a photograph may do it.

Widiar says:

Well, I'm assuming it's a glass texture and it would look a lot better with something showing through. But anyways, the piece itself is very good work, solid and clean.

Nice image, would like to see an SBS. Did you have the caustics turned on? Which render engine did you use? vray, scanline, or mentalray? Did you use any fill lights to enhance the HDR image? I do like this, I just wish you could expand on your explanation with an SBS.

author says:

I didn't use any renders in 3ds Max. Normally I Would use Mental Ray but for this clean untextured scene I used KeyShot 2 with a custom build shader.

Nice modeling, do feel that the background is lacking contrast.

avatar lchappell
lchappell says:

This is some more killer work, what sort of machine/computer did you use to render this on? How long did it take?

author says:

@Ichappell. Thanks I have an AMD dual core 3600, with 4GB of ram, and an Nvidia GS 8600 Graphics card (512mb). I run windows XP 64 Pro with SP3. This image took about 25 mins to render at 1920x1080 pxls. (probably alot less if I didn't have so much junk running in the background lol) I did have the Vray settings quite low. If this had been for a client I would have rendered it at much higher settings probably taking the render times into about 6-8 hours for a simple interior like this.

avatar pearlie

Beautiful work, author! Yikes, you call that a simple interior? I call it amazing.
