There is a constant quest for making advertisements which can make a good impression on the viewer in the few seconds of time available. A good ad is very much the difference between a ‘great’ month and an ‘ok’ month for sales. Employing the use of computer to create ads which are not possible to shoot otherwise is a very common and popular practice. New age advanced technology combined with some creative thinking can result in advertisements which can really awe the viewers. A very popular saying goes like: there is no second chance at making a good first impression. Most commercials get maximum 90 seconds of air time at a stretch and to deliver concept in that short a time is really an art. Here we compile some of the famous commercials which use computer generated images and graphics.
This highly popular advertisement made by 180 Amsterdam agency for Adidas features top soccer players from all over the world showing extreme skills and athleticism. Only they don’t play on soccer pitch but a metallic outline of the field suspended in mid air. This ad released in the year of 2005 uses some really cool computer graphics to make a very exciting ad. The lighting used against the black back drop creates a larger than life feel. This ad won many international awards.
This advertisement featured during the Super Bowl XXXIV (year 2000) shows ‘Superman’ Christopher Reeves who was paralyzed neck down in a motorcycle accident walking. This was a highly popular advertisement as it touched the hearts of millions of Christopher Reeves fans. Some fantastic computer enhancements were used to show Reeves walking. The computer graphics used are so real looking that many people actually believed reeves is actually walking. As this ad is believed to have inspired much hopes in people, this also met with some criticism.
Popular men’s cosmetic brand Axe’s advertisement shows a chocolate man walking around the streets spreading chocolaty sweetness. Chocolate is used to signify the smell of Axe’s new deodorant called dark temptation. The brand aims to market the new deodorant on the lines of chocolate which is often considered as an irresistible temptation for women. The ad shows a man applying the dark temptation deodorant being irresistible by the fairer sex and invoking an uncontrollable crave among them. Presence of many beautiful women some scantily clad makes this ad very popular among men.
A very popular FedEx commercial featured during the Super bowl in the year 2006. This ad shows a cave man trying to deliver a package using a pre-historic flying dinosaur. But soon after this courier service takes off, it is eaten by a much larger predator. The caveman goes back to his cave-office and tells his boss. The boss asks him whether he used FedEx and by getting a negative reply fires him even though the employee puts up a “FedEx doesn’t exist yet” argument. The whole scenario is quite funny and uses some great computer graphics to generate the pre-historic animals.
The coke commercial featured during the Super bowl 2007 is another very popular computer generated advertisement. The ad runs along the lines of the famous game ‘Grand Theft Auto’ but has a different story line. With the punch line as ‘you give a little love and it all comes back to you’, this ad shows a friendly protagonist drinks coke and helps out people. He still has the bad-ass attitude and people expect him to be as violent and rude and are scared of him. But with a coke in his hand he surprises people with his bonhomie and they also respond with friendly attitude. Thus the punch line of the ad. Having a sunny feeling to it, this ad undoubtedly makes it to the list.
This is another great ad to be featured during the Super bowl 2009. Ad features two astronauts driving a hep and trendy space vehicle on some other celestial body. The astronauts are shown to be having a time of their life while driving the vehicle. They race, drift do many other cool stuff. Then they get to work, collecting stones and other research, all in a very jovial mood. When they get back to their car, they find the tires missing, probably stolen by some aliens. All in all this ad has a very cool and fun look to it and uses some great computer techniques.
This commercial has a very inspirational feel to it. The ad is more of a compilation of different athletes showing exceptional courage and heart. It has a message saying that everything a person needs to succeed is already present in him-soul and all he has to do is muster the courage to find it and listen to it. A song called ‘I got soul but am not a soldier’ adds to the magic of this advertisement. With some really cool graphics and great editing, this ad is among the best computer graphic advertisements.
Also featuring during Super bowl 2007 is this Panasonic advertisement for its laptops. The commercial shows different professional people carrying the Panasonic laptop. They show firefighter, army officer, policeman- all considered to be rough jobs carrying a Panasonic laptop. This is to show that these laptops are tough. Next they show an engineer and a doctor carrying the same, thus showing that they are reliable. This all may sound a bit boring but the whole presentation is pretty cool and peppy.
The Hulu.com commercial shown during the Super bowl 2009 is another funny ad employing computer graphics. The ad presents Alec Baldwin as some alien whose species wants to rule the earth. The computer graphics used include a really cool X-ray vision of the working human brain and also alien tentacles growing out of Alec’s coat during the end of the commercial.
This commercial makes use of some really cute computer graphics. Small colored rabbits are shown flooding the street all made of some clay sort of deformable, shape changing materials. They all merge at a central place and then change in to different shapes, eventually breaking into millions of different colored objects. All in all a great visual treat.
Infiniti commercial shown during Super bowl 2007 is another great advertisement made with the help of computer generated graphics. It starts with a drop, generating waves, which eventually form into the car. Speed, power and acceleration are shown using similar concepts made with computer. This ad has managed to achieve a very hep and dynamic look employing some not very difficult to create computer graphics. The part where the car accelerates suddenly leaving behind a mist of its shape which eventually collapses is the high point of this commercial.
Hewlett Packard’s commercial featuring Tennis star Serena Williams is a great example of computer generated graphics used in advertisement. The ad shows Serena flipping pictures with her hand, maneuvering digital figures and many other cool things like dress designing painting with her fingers etc. all this is used to show different features of HP notebooks. This advertisement uses some very exciting animation, great editing, peppy background score and is definitely among the best computer aided commercials of recent times.
This ad generates the much popular mythical creature- ‘Loch Ness Monster’ using computer graphic aids. A short 30- second ad, this one manages to successfully deliver the message across to the viewers. The ad is based in Scotland seashore where a group of people are relaxing and their Toyota truck is standing nearby with one person inside it. The Loch Ness monster suddenly appears out of the water and catches the truck in its mouth and goes back. Couple of seconds later the truck is seen flying out of the water and hits the land, with the one person still inside it. The truck is undamaged and the driver drives off showing the sturdiness and durability of the truck.
This is another advertisement some cool special effects. The ad begins with a Nissan car running on a rocky terrain transforming into a robotic animal. The same animal later on transforms into another car running on a snowy terrain. Again the car transforms into a giant robotic spider and so on and so forth. The effects are really smooth and well made. This commercial is aimed to promote the Nissans 4 wheel driven cars.
Saving the best for the last, this is surely the best commercial designed using computer aids. Remember the famous advert, ‘bad cheetah’? Yea, we are talking about the Mountain Dew commercial which was aired in the year 2000. With the cyclist chasing a cheetah, tackling him finally reaching down his throat to take out a Mountain Dew this ad has the perfect mix of creativity and technology. The advertisement is full of adrenalin and energy and really stands up to its tag line of ‘Do The Dew’. The same words being etched on cheetah in the end, without hurting the PETA sentiments.

Hopefully by now, whoever did the Christopher Reeves Superbowl commercial comments, knows that he was injured in a horse riding accitdent not a motorcycle accident. A tiny bit of research would have been good here.
