looks like a slightly distorted version of the reference image with a few brush scatterings for "authenticity" to me.

I agree with Geexman. If you see the picture in the sbs, where in some of the steps you can find some large pieces of the image, it seems that the autor painted right over a photo. You can clearly see that is a photo by watching the cracks of the cookie.
If you compare the source image with the painted version, you will see that there are no big differences except for few strokes with the dotted brush that the autor used for texturing the surface.
