tapiona: Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic. FOLK ART expresses cultural identity by conveying shared community values and aesthetics. FOLK ART encompasses a range of utilitarian and decorative media, including cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal and more. If traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms. FOLK ART reflects traditional art forms of diverse community groups-ethnic, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age- or gender-based-who identify with each other and society at large. FOLK ARTISTS traditionally learn skills and techniques through apprenticeships in informal community settings, though they may also be formally educated. ( 5 years and 3688 days ago )
Contest Moderator: It's allowed to use © free images as a reference (if you use photo's as reference, even your own, you'll have to post them). Something else: it's NOT allowed to trace images. ( 5 years and 3687 days ago )
RAZ0R: please list a few examples of the solid coloring?? ( 5 years and 3685 days ago )
tapiona: examples are when you do shading, you would use a darker color of the same shade, if using paint, it would be adding a bit of black to it to darken the color, the colors are blocked. ( 5 years and 3685 days ago )
tapiona: crayons, water colors, colored pencils, you would just use more of the color to make it darker ( 5 years and 3685 days ago )
tapiona: solid coloring is when you use the same color, changing it by pressure you use. ( 5 years and 3685 days ago )
nofue: sorry, I don't get the description. Are we allowed to use shadows bay darkening with black, or aren't we? Even with crayons I'd put a layer of black or dark brown on top of a brighter color to get a 3d feeling, so it's not very clear what will be acceptable here. ( 5 years and 3683 days ago )

Where I come from Peach farms are big business. Different growers and packing houses, around the country, use a brand label for the containers that are used in the shipping of their product. The art work on these labels has become somewhat of a folk art genre of their own, and is collectable. (5 years and 3681 days ago)

Nose art is a decorative painting or design on the fuselage of a military aircraft, usually located near the nose, and is a form of aircraft graffiti. The practice of putting personalized decorations on fighting aircraft originated with Italian and German pilots. The first recorded piece of nose art was a sea monster painted on the nose of an Italian flying boat in 1913.

While begun for practical reasons of identifying friendly units, the practice evolved to express the individuality often constrained by the uniformity of the military, to evoke memories of home and peacetime life, and as a kind of psychological protection against the stresses of war and the probability of death.Because of its individual and unofficial nature, it is considered folk art, inseparable from work as well as representative of a group. It can also be compared to sophisticated graffiti. In both cases, the artist is often anonymous, and the art itself is ephemeral. In addition, it relies on materials immediately available. This picture was drawn by hand with brushes supplied standard issue in CS3. No filters or illegal tools were used.
