In this piece I used five colors. This is an imaginary scene done in acrylic. There is no source image. (5 years and 3202 days ago)

Very nice composition, but the tree branches are too symmetrical on the left, like the teeth on a comb. You need to paint some branches in the middle of the tree facing the viewer. Branches need to overlap and grow from different directions, not just the sides.

Here is a tutorial about painting pine trees you may find helpful:

Peaceful day at the Lake - created by tinstoy

Peaceful day at the Lake
Favs: 0SBS: 4Hi-resRank: 2/2Score: 50.7% (30)17780 views

This is an acrylic painting. It is all imagination, so there is no source image.
During the process I only used five colors: Cerulean Blue, Burnt Umber, Primary Yellow, Deep Green and White, if white is considered a color.
For the mountains I used the painting knife. The rest was done with brushes.
I am learning how to paint, so I am open to any criticism or suggestions. Thanks... (5 years and 3202 days ago)

Good overall composition, the eye is nicely led across the painting.

Your biggest problem is one of being consistent in your painting.
The tree trunks suddenly get very thin from thick, and you over did the above ground roots a bit too much.
Your coloring is also inconsistent. This is most noticeable in the sky. Generally, the sky is slighly darker at the top, getting a little lighter as you get nearer the earth. Your sky has like a "light colored halo" around the picture.
This brings up the biggest consistency problem, the water reflection. Your sky is darker and bluer, with clouds that the sky doesn't show, while your trees are LIGHTER in the water reflection. .

You also have the edges of the water a bit too perfect, more like a swimming pool or a puddle after a rain. If you study some photos of landscapes, you will see that nature is seldom quite so regularly shaped and spaced.

Here is an example to show you - Notice the coloring of the sky and the trees, and along the edges of the water:

It's a good start, you will get better the more you practice.

For someone that is new to painting you surely take on a difficult subject matter in a bold fashion. For this you are to be commended highly. Honestly I can not say enough about the courage a person displays when trying something new and then posting it in a forum such as this. Way to go Man!
As far as suggestions for you to improve.........do another one!
Message me if I can help at all. If you do Netflix there is an Acrylic painting video under special interests. Follow along and they will have you moving ahead fast. Best of luck!
Oh.....and fan brushes are great for grass.

Nice! I could see this hanging as a separate glass piece in the middle of a nice, big glass doorway. Nice design.

author says:

Pixelkid, thanks! It's one of a pair in a renovated 1860s home. The second one is the same design with a slightly different color scheme from the one in my SBS.

The window looks good as well but they didn't preserve all the colors- or maybe is a light effect.

author says:

Greymval, it's almost impossible to get a good shot of a window with very light lights & very dark darks. In some cases I combine different exposures to get a decent composite image, but as this contest was only supposed to feature the drawing I just posted a raw shot..

avatar Momof4boyoboys

Very realistic and well done. Love it!
