Here is a simple technique that allows you to colorize black and white images with excellent results. For the purpose of this tutorial, we will be using a photo of James Dean from the 1956 movie “Giantâ€.
While colorizing the entire photo would merely require we add 2 or 3 additional color layers, we will limit ourselves to colorizing James Dean only, leaving the automobile, sky and background in black and white.

How to achieve professional results when applying color to black and white photos using layer masks in GIMP. In this tutorial, I demonstrate the simple steps you can use to add color to any type of gray scale or black and white image all while retaining correct toning/contrast. I've also included a link to a useful skin tone HTML notation color chart for quick reference.

You maybe know this: in the very past important letters have been sealed using a so called wax seal. This is a hot wax drop on the opening of the envelope - then a seal ring containing the unique emblem of the empire was pressed on the wax to harden the wax. So the letter was secured from spies - because any opening would have breached the original letter.
This tutorial shows how to create such a wax seal in GIMP! Have fun ;)
