I've chosen to use screen shots so that its easier to see what tools and settings I've used (I hope)
step 2 of 18
Used many adjustment layers to make wood grain (the grey and black circle at the bottom of the layers palette)
step 3 of 18
step 4 of 18
paint and then smudge
step 5 of 18
Adjustment layers > levels again to add light and shadow
step 6 of 18
More adjustment layers and then a light touch with the dodge tool
step 7 of 18
Took the glare off the coins and then used light opacity paint to create shadows to change the direction of the light source
step 8 of 18
The pen tool is your friend
step 9 of 18
Used distort to stick the blade in the table at the right angle
step 10 of 18
Used paint and dodge to create a silver blade and then used layer styles to put light and shadow on it. (Tip: Don't just click the check box, click on the actual style name so you can make adjustments of color and opacity)
step 11 of 18
Dodge and burn using natural brushes add texture
step 12 of 18
Pen tool, right click, stroke with burn and I've started to wrap the handle with a leather strip. Notice I've also erased the loop part of the handle, changing it from a sword to a knife
step 13 of 18
Reduced the size of the brush and upped the exposure to give the leather wrap more depth. I also use low opacity paint on the bird to change its perspective
step 14 of 18
Light exposure with a big fuzzy brush puts candle light on the table. Layer style > color overlay puts candle light on the skull. How romantic!
step 15 of 18
Argggghhh, ye scurvy dawg. That be my treasure map.
step 16 of 18
Dodge and burn with a natural brush that's been enlarged to give that mottled look to the parchment.
step 17 of 18
Ho, me mateys. There be buried treasure here. Argh, me caligraphy is worse than a drunken sailor walkin' up the gangplank. The fates be kind to include fancy text in the text drop down menu.
step 18 of 18
Distort and warp to put the map on the parchment. Soft, fuzzy brush to add shadow.
Now, ye landlubbers, some minor touch up and ye got yerselves a loverly pitcher.
