first, I sketched a model of what I wanted my pirate to look like.

Then, i drew in flat color over that.

Then I made the coat from the acorn using warp and a little smudge, dodging and burning to make the shadowing... After I had all of those pieces together I added the seams where the peices met, as well as that patch on the arm to the left. I also drew a hook.

After that i added detail to the beard, and put the skull under it ( the skull was from the other contest on the site, please make me aware if i have to put it down as a source and I will.) I then painted the shirt and pants, and the pelt over that...just simply used the paintbrush and burn and dodge on varying opacity's and sizes.

Next I made the peg leg out of the acorn (warp) and drew the hand, sword, and leg. All made simply using the paintbrush in varying sizes and the burn and dodge tool.

used polygonal lasso to select peices of the acorn to use for the pole, then free transformed and dodged and burned to make shadows. After that I drew the rope.

added the deck of the ship... same deal...cut out a piece of acorn then free transform and warp....Then guassian blurred it to make a little blur... made the shadow with burn on a low opacity.

found a picture I liked on ww.sxc.hu and put it in the bg... scaled it up and positioned it where i wanted it. Then i guassian blurred a lot.

added some finishing touces... white paintbrush and smudge on the hat and buttons on the jacket.
