First I created a rough sketch of Jack 'o' Box in illustrator with a pen tablet( bought one... cheap quality very hard to use... but will get used to it and buy a better later on)...
I thought of modifying the lineart later on... But didn't, cause I like the way it was...
step 2 of 18
Now I imported the line art and placed in a document... Also placed the rusty source in the document...
Also I am always keeping the lineart at the top most layer throughout this process of making this image...
step 3 of 18
Now I copied a piece of rusted metal from the source and pasted underneath the lineart...
I used that metal piece for one of the box side...
step 4 of 18
Now I neatly masked the area of the metal piece that appears out the lineart...
step 5 of 18
Now I used perspective to align another metal piece to the the other side of the box...
step 6 of 18
In the same way I made the lid for the lineart...
step 7 of 18
Now made the inside of the box by using warp on a metal piece...
step 8 of 18
All the visible side of the box is made now... Now on to Jack...
step 9 of 18
Now taking a copy of metal bolts( or screw, whathever they are... Those round thingies) and enlarging it...
I use it for the main body of Jack...
step 10 of 18
Now doing the same thing for the face...
Note sometimes the metal piece comes outside the lineart... I use mask then...
step 11 of 18
This time made the collar...
step 12 of 18
This way I completed inserting the textures...
Only the spring remains...
step 13 of 18
Now used a rectangular metal texture piece and wrapped all along the spring line art...
Also gave a closing stroke to the spring...
step 14 of 18
Now cleaned up the lineart...
step 15 of 18
With the lineart cleaned up... It looks better now...
Now on to shading...
step 16 of 18
Now with a 20% opacity soft black brush... Shaded over the metal textures...
step 17 of 18
Added pupils to the eyes and blurred out the shading with 4 px radius gaussian blur...
step 18 of 18
Lastly made the background black and added a outer glow thru layer style...
And smudged around the edges...
But I didn't liked it( and was advised on it too)... So removed it all and instead used a orange sunburst using the custom tool brush...
