Opened up the spider reference in photoshop... Yes photoshop... Entire work is done in photoshop and a lil illustrator... No 3D software used...
step 2 of 32
Now enlarged the pic and rotated it to get a good angle...
step 3 of 32
Now with the pen tool made the abdomen filled with 20 to 30% gray... Color actually doesn't matter here...
step 4 of 32
Then gave a layer effect of gradient overlay with a custom gradient...
step 5 of 32
Made the thorax in the same way...
step 6 of 32
Made the leg segment in the same way... I didn't join the leg yet... Also for each part, I used different setting for the gradient overlay such as spread, angle and position...
step 7 of 32
Now the base object is finished... Hmmm looks a little 3D doesn't it... :)
step 8 of 32
Now I merged the effect into the layer, otherwise the burn won't show up and I didn't wanted to use opacity...
step 9 of 32
Now I started burning it...
step 10 of 32
Now I started adding joints for the spider and burned it as well...
Started to burn other parts as well...
step 11 of 32
Okay the joints and burns are done for now...
step 12 of 32
Now I added gear for the legs joining the thorax...
step 13 of 32
Added screw and beveling beneath it to show depth...
Also burned the screw...
step 14 of 32
Screw all done...
step 15 of 32
Now with the pen tool drew some line like this...
step 16 of 32
Beveling and masking some part of it...
step 17 of 32
Doing the same for the rest of the legs...
step 18 of 32
Now I imported the spider render into illustrator and made gear using circle and star shape and using 3D bevel effect...
Also using the spider as guide re-sized the size, changed the angle and position... So that I won't need to skew or perspective in photoshop...
step 19 of 32
Imported the gear into photoshop... See it matches fine with the position... Might be little off, but better than skewing...
step 20 of 32
Masking the gear...
step 21 of 32
Adding an another gear by using the previous method...
step 22 of 32
Now adding a black strip beneath the gears and masking so as to show the gears are half way inside...
step 23 of 32
Adding reflection of the gear and one of the leg...
Also adding the pipe...
step 24 of 32
Now added a small smoke...
step 25 of 32
Added some more reflection...
step 26 of 32
Now added reflection for the gear at the base of the legs...
step 27 of 32
Added more reflection...
step 28 of 32
Added a key...
step 29 of 32
Burning the key a little and added a key hole...
step 30 of 32
Added a key reflection...
step 31 of 32
Now added a full body reflection on the floor...
step 32 of 32
Added a shadow of the full body... Also added a 20% grey to white gradient for the background...
