This is my first preliminary layout. I decided where I wanted the elements & proceeded with my tree. I always start with the trunk and "grow" it as I go, paying close attention to the weight distribution of the branches as they split and grow outward. The quality of this pic is poor because I sketch very lightly in the beginning. That makes the eraser,which I use a lot, more effective.
