first off, I selected out the berries so I could remove them from the background and use them as main component in berry fairy
step 2 of 4
Once berries are extracted, I applied a motion blur to the background so I could use it for my canvas to assemble my fairy on. Brightness was controlled with both levels and curves to mute things down enough so as not to compete with the fairy.
step 3 of 4
I duplicate berry components as many times as I need and reshape by using a combination of free transform and warp tools to get the shape I want for the skirt, wings, bodice, sleeves, hair, and flowers. I change colors by using hue and saturation, and also levels. A drop shadow is applied when I thought it was necessary to achieve the effect I desired.
step 4 of 4
I then used the pen tool to draw out paths for the body parts and filling the selections with a flesh toned gradient. I used the burn tool for the shading for details. The eyes were actually a tiny version of the berries. Very simple sketches just to get the impression of head, torso, and arms. Put all together, add shadow if desired and you are done.
