I started to create the chess pieces.
First, the queen....normally!
Combined different pieces of the marker, used warp, resize, rotate, flip to get better shapes.

I got the image of a chess board and copied the top part over the bottom part in order to cover the initial chess pieces and get a better looking backround.

I resized the chess board and placed it on the bottom.
Also, desaturated it.
Placed one pawn and then copy/paste it multiple times to get more pawns.

Added the rest of the pieces.

Cropped the image a touch to get a better focus.
Colored it slightly using hue/saturation and filter/sepia.
Softened edges.
