Lasso tool cuts tree out from source photo, and tree is moved into source background. Background is duplicated for further work. Next pen tool is used to outline the roof shapes and white fill layer is added to roof shapes.
step 5 of 11
Here the dock is outlined with the pen tool, and white fill layer is added.
step 6 of 11
Posts are being added by cloning texture off corner post of original source photo. This original post will be cloned down in size. Snow will be added to tops of posts with airbrush and brush tools.
step 7 of 11
Tree and much of background has snow added using airbrush and brush tools. Burn tool will help add shadows.
step 8 of 11
Tree has been moved around as background was being worked on, and I finally decided to place it at the left side of dock with boats, small on left and larger one in middle. I started with three boats but decided to delete one of them to keep background not quite as busy. Tree lights are designed with small brush tool in varying colors. Lights on boats and houses in background also are added with brush tools. They are dulled eventually with burn tool.
step 9 of 11
A lens flare is added behind the star on the tree. Light is kept rather low.
step 10 of 11
Here a new pattern layer is added to add a snow storm. Opacity is kept to under 30% and blue is used for the layer color.
step 11 of 11
Finally, tree seemed to need more snow on it, so it has been added with brush tools, shadowed with burn tool and highlighted with dodge tool. A slight yellow glow is added to tree as it has been to dock to pick up light of the tree.
