Creation of Old Man and the Sea: Step 7

step 8 of 17

Map is desaturated to get even coloring for background

Creation of Old Man and the Sea: Step 8

step 9 of 17

Creation of Old Man and the Sea: Step 9

step 10 of 17

Ship mast is placed on left side of canvas, contrast is upped, and it is moved to back layer.

Creation of Old Man and the Sea: Step 10

step 11 of 17

Ship wheel is now added and scaled to fill entire canvas, then opacity taken down about 50%

Creation of Old Man and the Sea: Step 11

step 12 of 17

step 13 of 17

Conch shell is chopped, leaving a small amount of soft shadow around it. It is placed on front layer at bottom, right corner and contrast is brought up to show its shape well.

step 14 of 17

More shells were needed, so they have been chopped with soft edges around them and placed on layer behind the conch shell. Contrast will be upped just enough to give them more color.

step 15 of 17

Mariner is now chopped and edges softened. He is sized to fit over central part of the wheel, then color is brought into his face with the hue/saturation tool. Contrast and brightness must be adjusted to give him enough detail to show through final layer.

step 16 of 17

Here the ship's wheel is flipped to make the most of its design.

step 17 of 17

Finally, a new layer is added to the front after all layers are merged. New layer is in brown tones, then with hue/saturation tool, some greens are allowed to emerge which seem to give more interest than just a single color all over.
