Bird is sketched here on a new canvas using a source bird as reference.
step 2 of 20
Portion of papaya source is lassoed to be formed into a feather.
step 3 of 20
Tail feather shaped with eraser tool, scale and rotate tools.
step 4 of 20
Two side feathers formed using eraser tool. To be added in rows, starting at bottom and going up. Feathers are duplicated with 'alt' key.
step 5 of 20
Darker layer is added, then feather is flipped and yellowed for next layer as we move upwards.
step 6 of 20
Once feather are in place, they are dodged and burned, then yellow-greens are increased in color/balance
step 7 of 20
Feather shape duplicated with 'alt' key and layered in overlapping pattern.
step 8 of 20
Pod from source has been removed with lasso tool and will be chopped and shaped for more feathers.
step 9 of 20
Shaping has been done with the edit/transform/distort tool, then lower edge has 'cuts' into it with fine eraser tool to look like a feather.
step 10 of 20
New feather shape has been duplicated (alt) key and will fill in lower back. Rotate tool will help give them proper angles to fit area.
step 11 of 20
Dark green lines are now added to feather to be used above yellow. I used my pen tablet, but a small paintbrush can also be used with the mouse.
step 12 of 20
The textured feathers are added in more layers, still going upwards, then merged into a layer with tail and wing feathers.
step 13 of 20
Wing feathers have been created and put in place, and now another section of source is moved in to be used as side feathers which have turned-up edges.
step 14 of 20
Back is covered with feathers scaled to smaller size, and bird is ready for head and beak now.
step 15 of 20
Here parrot has been finished. Later, I decided to use different head on the smaller birds, changed color with brush tool and also used eraser tool to change tail size on them.
step 16 of 20
Source photo by kconnors at morguefile is moved onto new canvas.
step 17 of 20
The first piece of green from the source papaya photo is added to old tree.
step 18 of 20
Another piece of green source is added and shape lengthened and changed with edit/transform/distort tool.
step 19 of 20
Pieces of green have been shaped with distort and smudge tool to curl around the tree, and snake has been finished. Both the burn and dodge tools are used to shape all the green pieces, and edges are carefully trimmed with eraser tool.
step 20 of 20
Birds are put in place, a part of foot is drawn in with paint tool on larger bird. Burn and dodge tools give light and dark areas where needed.
