For background
First decide what you want to do, then use layers of spot color. Light/dark..
Further you will use the smudge brush to blend...

Use "smudge"tool to blend the layers...

Using a "soft brush" number 3...and selecting smudge tool...smudge to look like grass effect...

Further smudge, and also use the dodge tool to add some highlights, to get closer to the result you are happy with...

Add more highlights with the dodge tool... using soft brush always!

Now, copy the layer and place on top of the first...add a screen to this layer and 50% opacity...This helps to lighten the image overall..

Add some snow, with the same method used to make the background (spot color, with lighter/darker tones and smudge...smudge ..smudge!!!)

I drew my little angel by using the pen tool and stroking it with 2px...

Again using spot colors of different shades, add colors to drawing...
Colors I used are above...

Fill the whole angel with this method - above you can see what colors I have used... I will now begin to smudge to get desired effect!

Now you can see the progress from left to right... I began to smudge all the spot colors used, o create a smoother result...
