Original source photo is turned into sunset using the hue/saturation tool. A layer of orange-brown will be added at the very end when all layers are merged visibly.
step 6 of 13
Group of horses in snow is lassoed and moved into background.
step 7 of 13
Yellows are upped here slightly using the hue/saturation tool.
step 8 of 13
Horses were originally reversed, but I decided to have them enter from the left, so reversed it again using the edit/transform/flip horizontally tool. Horses are merged with water here using eraser and clone tools.
step 9 of 13
Filter layer was added here with slight brownish/warmed to soften whole look. Opacity can be set to get desired tone over all.
step 10 of 13
Birds have been added here using the brush tool at a fine setting. Some birds wings are up, some down, and sizes are varied. The birds also are designed in a line which runs diagonally , moving from faraway hills down to the water, helping the eye to move through to the horses.
step 11 of 13
Dead tree added in foreground to balance darks of lone tree and the horse which will be added next.
step 12 of 13
Here the water splashes have been taken from the single horse photo using a clone tool, then mustang for foreground is lassoed from source photo and moved into scene. Since its hooves were in the grass, the front hooves had to recreated using brush tool, and after the horse was chopped, the edit/transform/rotate tool was used to bring the horse up on its feet. Hue/contrast tool was used to bring up the blues and reds to give it a darker silhouette against all the red/browns.
step 13 of 13
A final visible merge was made, then a brownish filter placed over it with opacity at 64%.
