First of all, a section of the source photo is cropped out and elongated with the edit/transform/scale tool.
step 3 of 13
Section of source to be used is cloned to cut out part of the tracks, leaving some tracks for river or trails on map, and also to be 'stitched' like a tear in the map.
step 4 of 13
Torn edges are created with eraser tool to cut out portions all around.
step 5 of 13
All edges have been 'torn' here, and ready to begin map.
step 6 of 13
This step I created a directional icon for the bottom corner, however, later I decided that it looked too 'professional' for a pirate, so erased it and did a much simplified form of the directions.
step 7 of 13
A ship offshore and trail have been drawn in using a pen tool and tablet. Lines across the diagonal line represent a tear in the parchment or sheepskin that has been mended.
step 8 of 13
South Seas and Green Mountain areas are drawn in here, once again using the pen and tablet.
step 9 of 13
Finished mountains, trails and landmarks are here now. To give the map an older look, liquify squeeze tool is used here and there, and also liquify warp tool to turn down and shape areas here and there.
step 10 of 13
Map is introduced into treasure photo here ready to add some shadows and fit it to the shape of the chest.
step 11 of 13
Coins are being duplicated here and pearls are begun using the brush tool. Burn tool will put in shadows and small brush adds strings between some of the pearls.
step 12 of 13
Pearls have been completed and skeleton teeth have been worked on with a small brush tool to deliniate them better.
step 13 of 13
Finals details are touched up, checking especially for any shadows which might need added.
