I started off with a sphere primitive

I reduced the segments from 36 to 10

Then changed the Phong angle from 80 deg to zero

I made my object editable and stretched using the scale tool

and flattened

I selected some faces and using the scale tool again contracted

and again, my aim was to get a leaf shape.

I selected a Banji material and changed some properties, then assigned to my object

Next I chose an array to place my object in and made six copies in a circular formation.

I use the bridge tool to close the gaps

next I want to seal the hole

the create polygon tool is used to go from point to point

I use the knife tool to create some more geometry

I select the faces and extrude

I select some more faces and use the extrude inner tool for the centre piece and use the bevel tool on the arms. I then select the inside faces and plan to use bevel again to form points.

I added a floor, some lights and a camera.
Finally I make two renders one where my objects material is set on solid object and another with solid object unchecked. I bring both images into photoshop place my unchecked version above the other and set the blending mode to hard light and reduce the opacity to 40% then apply an adjustment layer of curves to give some contrast.
