Masked the original image, and cut unwanted areas.

Continued masking the outside areas, to get the thorny edges by themselves.

The edges are cleaned, and look nice.

Took the chestnut out of the shell, and left the prickly shell by itself. Clonned the middle part of the shell.

Selected an area from the top of the shell to get this shape. Used the Filter - Liquify, to transform it.

Using the Transform Tool, I made the shape swirl around, several times, until I was happy with this form. Merge layers down.

Selected these two shaped areas, below the thorny side, to make a kind of branch.

Using the Filter - Liquify - Warp, I got this form. Used Curves to make it darker and shinnier.

Copied the piece of branch, several times to make a kind of frame.

Put things together to form this primitive art form.

I make a rounded selection from the chestnut to make the buttons like. Added some shadows. I will appreciate your suggestions and comments to make my work better. Thank you all, and good luck!
