Loon painting (my own) used as reference for creating loons.
step 3 of 15
Loons head is formed from black of sculpture handle after rotating the section then using the eraser and smudge tools. Brush tool paints in the beak area.
step 4 of 15
Here the band and neck details are created from small sections of the sculpture.
step 5 of 15
Portion for feather is lassoed and chopped, then duplicated in 2 different sizes. These are duplicated and used to cover breast area, placing them very close together, also rotating them as needed to fit curve of breast.
step 6 of 15
Using the brush tool, the body shape and generally where groups of feathers will go are sketched in. The section of wing is lassoed and duplicated then lower tail section is formed starting at bottom and overlapping duplicated pieces.
step 7 of 15
Here two more rows of feathers are added as shown.
step 8 of 15
Back feathers are made from another section of sculpture source. After chopping, some arched shapes are made with smudge tool to represent the loons feathers a little closer, then duplicated and rotated as needed to form the back sections.
step 9 of 15
Lower wing feathers are formed using another section lassoed from sculpture and shaped with scale and distort tools. Shape is duplicated and once again layered close together, rotating as needed.
step 10 of 15
Background is moved in and duplicated. Back layer is set to 75% opacity, then front layer is set to 45% to allow back layer to show through but to look misty. Later, another layer of the reeds will be added to front right corner at 100% opacity.
step 11 of 15
Loon is now moved into background and duplicated. One is scaled smaller and moved behind the other, then reflections are created with still another duplication which is flipped vertically and lightened with opacity scale.
step 12 of 15
Back loon has had red eye added, with detail made using the dodge tool. Shadows are also added and a filter of light gray put over this loon.
step 13 of 15
Front loon now has green airbrushed over head, then little black around edges. Eye is brushed in with brush tool as in other loon. Shadows are burned in with burn tool.
step 14 of 15
Section of reeds are lassoed and moved into scene for foreground at right front. They are chopped with the background eraser tool and further cleaned with regular eraser tool. This is kept at 100% opacity . Smudge tool was used to create some movement in the water and slight green-blue brushed over that area.
step 15 of 15
After layers are all merged, a golden filter is added at 60% to bring up the sunset colors a little.
