I figured that horses are of a similar build, I just had to get the heads roughly in the right position and I modelled with individual polygons, this was my first attempt at this type of modelling and it did take quite a few hours but I was quite pleased with the result.
step 11 of 23
I wanted my horse to resemble a Unicorn so I created a spike and added a twist deformer
step 12 of 23
Next was the Rook, the merlons were created with a tube and some of the faces were extruded.
step 13 of 23
I wanted my Bishop to have a Bishop's Mitre
step 14 of 23
The Bishop's Mitre was created with 3 splines in the shape of a leaf with the middle spline curving outward.
step 15 of 23
The 3 splines were placed in a loft nurbs tool to form a half oval which will be one half of my Bishop's Mitre.
step 16 of 23
My Pawn was the last piece to be made the arms were made in the same way as the King and Queens crowns using a cone, array and deformer.
step 17 of 23
This is the deformer influencing the arms and also the sphere.
step 18 of 23
This is the lineup to give you a sense of size for each piece.
step 19 of 23
The board was created with individual cubes and placed ensuring even spacing around. I chose two materials for light and dark, a glass type and a painted metal type.
step 20 of 23
I placed 3 lights in my scene and also used a sphere with an illuminance material to further offer more light to my pieces and board.
step 21 of 23
I tried out rendering with the Ambient Occlusion then the Global Illumination effects and liked the result of the Ambient Occlusion, so this is what I opted for
step 22 of 23
I set my size and resolution and rendered my scene to the picture viewer. 13 hours later Bob's your Uncle. There are some things that I would like to change but unfortunately the rendering time is a right killer.
I havent used Cinema 4D much, but looking at the result you achieved here I feel really inspired to start using it more. Awesome work!
