Paint solid colour a background.
I chose grey tones to enhance the Conchs colour.
step 2 of 10
Using a hard and soft brush, paint an abstract sand scene onto your background.
step 3 of 10
Add some more brush strokes to create more "sand" detail...but still keeping it abstract ( to give the effect of wet-smooth sand) not too much grainy!
step 4 of 10
Using reference, start to sketch the Conch onto the canvass.
Then begin to add flat colour, bit by bit ( doesn't have to be a perfect match) as close as you can get to original colour is good.
After adding colour- smudge and smudge to get a smooth result.
step 5 of 10
This is the result after smudging.
This is the base colour/coat and now I begin to add shadows and more details as I go along.
step 6 of 10
Add more detail and shadow to mouth of Conch.
step 7 of 10
Now add detail to the body of the Conch, using a soft brush (white colour) add colour and smudge. Repeat this with shades of grey and brows to create depth-texture... smudge!
step 8 of 10
Now on a separate layer, using a hard brush, add white and begin to draw some highlights. The brush should have a high opacity and be about 6-7px varying.
I tried to make it as realistic as possible, drawing dots and lines to imitate a glossy/shiny look.
step 9 of 10
Add some sand to where the Conch lies and shadows underneath the shell...
step 10 of 10
Smudge the background with a soft brush at 65% to the extent that it looks completely smooth...but leave the foreground of the picture untouched. This will give the effect of depth and will look as if the shell is in focus and the background is blurred.
