I began with an elongated canvas, thinking of a totem pole type construction. That will change later. The source block is duplicated 2 times. (Use alt key for duplication.)
step 2 of 10
Mouth is sketched in with brush tool. I started with a larger mouth but at very end decided on a smaller one.
step 3 of 10
Eyes are started on another block. They are first sketched in with hard brush tool, the edges are softened with a soft brush tool to give a carved 3-D look. Dodge tool helps bring highlights for even more shape. With clone tool, some darker marbled areas can be repeated around mouth also to give more shape.
step 4 of 10
This shows eyes detail as they are worked on.
step 5 of 10
This is where I decided to change to more horizontal canvas. The canvas is rotated 80 deg. and each stone is then rotated with edit/transform/rotate tool.
step 6 of 10
Rather than just have eyes, I decided to add a nose as well. It was formed as in previous description of adding the eyes.
step 7 of 10
Here the background carving is added, and blocks are inserted under the 'Hear no...' monkeys. Also, the canvas was enlarged at the bottom where an interesting foreground will be created from shapes in background panel .
step 8 of 10
A bottom trim for stools is taken from bottom of frame around the background, Strips are sized and shaped with perspective and scale tools. Leaf layer for monkeys to sit on is formed from leafy vine shape in background photo. Many duplications and rotating to get placement of leaves, then shading with burn tool . Some leaves are removed with eraser tool to see monkeys feet/hands to help make it appear that the monkeys are sitting on the leaves.
step 9 of 10
Floor was made using a square of background and duplicated to fill space. Duplications were shaped with perspective tool and angled sides fit together and merged. A quilt filter is used on the floor to give it the effect of carpeting. Filter on stone stools is craquelure, and filter on monkey planters at bottom is Noise filter. Finally, a reddish brown filter goes over entire merged canvas, opacity set at 90%.
