This painting was started on a panel originally intended for a 3-panel dressing blind painting. The tree and sky were washed in roughly first.

This was a latter stage of the painting. I did not like the effect the rock-open space are had with relation to the tree. It gave the composition a tension that I didn't care for.

This step was added to show a way to use Photoshop to check yourself during a process. As I said, I didn't lie the lower portion of the piece. I used Photoshop to clone some of my dead grass and move it to the right. I wanted to see how it would effect the composition. From there, I sketched in the grass after being satisfied with what i had seen in Photoshop.

My first time through college, the professor would have us view our paintings through a black & white video camera to more easily assess the distribution of value without the distraction of color. That is the purpose for this gray-scale shot.
