I started with a gradient background, then using a soft brush at low opacity, added the clouds and grassland.
step 2 of 7
I used the smudge tool at about 45% hardness in an up and down motion to pull up the grass. Sketched out a lion.
step 3 of 7
Using a soft brush at different opacities, I started filling out the lion. I discovered I wasn't as sure about a lion's markings as I thought I was, so I found a reference photo. To get the white parts, I erased the background.
step 4 of 7
I used different layers for the lion's mane and, same as before, a soft brush with different opacities.
step 5 of 7
1. I thought everything was looking a little too washed out, so I used brightness/contrast to darken the lion.
2. A few more details and a few swipes with the dodge and burn tool.
3. and 4. There doesn't appear to be much difference between them, but close up there is. In 3, I merged the layers for the mane and then smudged it together. In 4., I used the blur tool on the entire image.
I then added some mountains in the background to balance out the image.
step 6 of 7
So, yeah...no gradients. With this new and improved image, I used the 300 size soft brush, reduced opacity and a 300 size, reduced opacity soft eraser to get the gradient. I've put a grey background on this so you can see how I used reduced opacity.
step 7 of 7
I've taken away the grey background so you can see how everything looks. Squish all the elements into a square and you'll have the finished result.
