step 1 of 26

I make this model using 3D Studio Max 2008.
Before I explain how to create my project, I’m very sorry if my English is not good enough.
OK, First of all, I create a cylinder in front viewport with Side: 10.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 1

step 2 of 26

Then I apply FFD 4 x 4 x 4 modifier to create trumpet shape.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 2

step 3 of 26

After that convert it to editable poly so I can modify the shape.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 3

step 4 of 26

Then I select the polygon and delete it.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 4

step 5 of 26

After that I select the edge.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 5

step 6 of 26

Use conect to make segment.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 6

step 7 of 26

In the front viewport select 10 edge.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 7

step 8 of 26

In the left Viewport using Shift and drag the mouse to create the polygon.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 8

step 9 of 26

In the Perspective Viewport I create some polygon. If you do this, don’t forget to activate the snap toggle (snap to vertex is the option).

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 9

step 10 of 26

After that selecting some Vertex and scale it alittle bit to make Lily flower crown looks like.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 10

step 11 of 26

After that, in the Left Viewport I rotate it about 20 degres and create a line to be a path for the polygon extrude.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 11

step 12 of 26

In the Perspective Viewport, select the polygon in the back of the trumpet.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 12

step 13 of 26

Then I Apply Extrude Polygon along Spline to make the tail of the trumpet.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 13

step 14 of 26

Then, in the left viewport I make some vertex adjustment to make the end of the tail is really-really 90 degrees vertical.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 14

step 15 of 26

Then selecting the polygon and extrude it to make a shape like showing in the image.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 15

step 16 of 26

After that I select some edge and makes 2 segment using conect edge.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 16

step 17 of 26

NExt I'm Selecting some polygon then delete it.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 17

step 18 of 26

After that for the last creation of the gramophone trumpet (he..he..he.. I don't know what it calls), I’m applying Shell modifier and Turbosmooth.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 18

step 19 of 26

After the trumpet shape is finish, next I create the box using the poly modelling, the disc, and the poly modelling disc player, the poly modelling trumpet hanger, etc.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 19

step 20 of 26

Next, I arrange the model as shown in the image.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 20

step 21 of 26

The last of this model is creating a needle and a sphere. And arrange the needle and sphere as shown in the image.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 21

step 22 of 26

Now it is time to texturing the model. I used 7 different material to texturing the model.

As you see in the image, the first slot I use black standard blinn material. The 2nd slot I use cooper template from Arch & Design Mental ray. Arch & Design Mental ray material is default from 3ds max 2008 if you want rendering with Mental Ray. The 3rd slot I use chrome template from Arch & Design Mental ray. The 4th I use Light Yellow standard blinn material. The 5th slot I use black disc material, and I used Alpha Channel for the opacity. The 6th and 7th slot I use Wood texture from Arch & Design Mental ray, but I modify the Wood texture with the Wood texture from 3ds max 2008 default map.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 22

step 23 of 26

For better result I use some supporting model. That is Wall and round Table. The Wall was created using AEC Extended Wall. And the Round table was created from Spline and applying Lathe modifier.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 23

step 24 of 26

The last action is giving light and render the scene. For the light I use mr Area Omni with Raytrace Shadow as shadow selection.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 24

step 25 of 26

After that I take a free target camera and try to render the scene using Mental Ray renderer.

Creation of My Gramophone Model: Step 25

step 26 of 26

It looks good for now, but I’m not satisfy with the result because the wall and shadow looks very flat. There are no bouncing light or shadow. So, I use Final Gather, Photon, and Ambient Oclussion. Sorry, I’m not explain the technique in here. This technique can be learn in 3ds Max Help tutorial. The render take very long duration, maybe because my computer Pentium 4 and 1 Gb of RAM he..he..he...

Now it’s done! You can see the bounching light that impact to models. It makes the models more real than before.
