My own picture from a local civil war reenactment was roughly cut out and placed into the source to see if it may work in the scene.

The troops are in the process of being trimmed and the barbed wire (left) is partially cloned away. I'm very careful not to leave repetitive patterns from clone stamping as they really take away from believability. My layers were also desaturated at this time.

Troop areas were divided into two layers here so the ones in the rear could be softened and given a slight Gaussian blur to fade them into the mist.

A higher grass-line was added in front of the soldiers here because their legs were too short with regard to the shortness of the source grass.

I finally used hue/saturation to give the picture a sepia look because I wanted it to look like an old photo.
