The first thing I did was block out the elements. However, the story changed as I went along.
step 2 of 14
Took me forever to figure out what I did. My initial notes said "Thick heavy brush, dual paint, dodge and burn". Sure. To expand on that--111 thick heavy brush with the same brush used as the dual brush, using the colors shown. Painted with a swishing motion. Then using the same brush, dodged and burned in a swishing motion. Finally, dodge and burn again using a large soft brush along the sides.
step 3 of 14
I used the wet media scatter brush #14 to dodge and burn
step 4 of 14
Beading-I used lines of colored dots arranged in a lightning pattern (so his arrows would be swift), then warped it to the quiver. Dodge and burn for shading.
step 5 of 14
Fletch made with thick heavy brush 100 (reduced in size), dodge/burn, distort. Arrow made with the pen tool.
step 6 of 14
Paint and dodge and burn on bow, ties and hide. For the fur, I used a wet media brush with dual brush and color dynamics, then smudged and dodged and burned.
step 7 of 14
Added twigs and branches
step 8 of 14
Small basic brush to draw in the needles. Dodge/burn using a natural brush with shape dynamics, scattering and dual brush.
step 9 of 14
Paint, hard smudge with natural brush, dodge/burn with natural brush
step 10 of 14
Now I started adding the background. The water was made with a wet media brush. On top of that, I used wet media brush 14 (scattered dry brush small tip, enlarged. Frankly, I don't remember how I made the banks. I've spent an hour trying to replicate it and I just can't. Sorry. The grass was made with a natural brush and then smudged and dodge/burn. The trees were made the same as the first tree, with natural brush 14 for the greenery. Dodge/burn for shading.
step 11 of 14
I widened the stream, finished the grass and trees and blurred them for depth.
step 12 of 14
After several failed attempts at trying to get the anatomy right, I had my kid pose for me so I could see what I was doing wrong. I drew a quick sketch and then made the parts piecemeal so I could change things as needed.
step 13 of 14
Paint and dodge/burn
step 14 of 14
The ground was made the same way as the banks...I guess. I know a dual brush was involved and probably a wet media brush, some dodge/burn, maybe some blur. In the final image, I did some rearranging, dodge/burn behind the trees, lowered the opacity on the water and other minor fixes.
