On a flat background, I blocked in the basic shape and shades of the image.
The canvas I used was 3600x5100, or 12 in. x 17 in. at 300 dpi. This allows for a good amount of detail, but might be hard for a slower computer to handle.
I see painting usually like focusing a camera: you start loose and fuzzy, with little detail, and just gradually focus in on the image. Here I added detail on his face, and sharpened the outlines of his form.
And even more details!
As a note, my version looks much like the source so I could practice. The personalization comes later.
step 8 of 12
In this one I really focused on the contrast of the image, a part I had not given too much attention before.
step 9 of 12
More details, and a bit of moisture and shine to make him look wet and luscious.
step 10 of 12
And that is all for the copying!
Changed his mouth and eye for a bit of "Hey there"
step 11 of 12
I've always loved selective colors, and decided to include that here. Used a new ref for his eye color, which is a tasty honey/caramel/molasses type thing. I chose blue for his shirt and the background to help his eye stand out.
