Start with a disc, reduce cap segments to 1 and increase radial segments to 72.
Make editable - "C" key.
Use poly modelling mode.
step 2 of 15
Extrude up slightly to form the rim of the hat. then extrude inner and extrude up again to form a good base.
step 3 of 15
Make 3 further extrudes to create the height you want.
step 4 of 15
Using the "points modelling" take the layers you have created and rotate and move them to curve the hat backwards. Its easier to do this in a right view.
step 5 of 15
In this step I took the rim of the hat and the top of the hat and did a slight bevel to smooth the edges.
step 6 of 15
Applying hyper nurbs really shows the final product and what it will look like, make all your minor adjustments now.
step 7 of 15
Move the hat up a bit and create a 4x4 plane which is going to act as the stand for the hat.
step 8 of 15
select the top polygons of the plane, turn of preserve groups and extrude inner a little to separate the polys. After this do a straight extrude with a variability of 80%.
step 9 of 15
If you select to create a sky, then double click on the sky object you get an editor panel choose whatever sky you wish. I went with a cartoonie one since this is a silly hat contest. Added the sun object also with an area shadow.
step 10 of 15
Test render, this is the position of the hat sitting on the blocks and the sun light. Looking good.
- I like to render views pretty much all the time to check on my work, it helps to conceptualize what you are doing.
step 11 of 15
Take the points on the rim of the hat and by right clicking select the brush tool. Then move some points up and some down to create a wavy feelings along the side of the hat.
step 12 of 15
Select the hyper nurbs object and go to hair>add hair.
step 13 of 15
For me I set the length to 10 and the count to 250,000. Depending on the size of your image and the tone you are trying to create, experiment with these settings.
step 14 of 15
In cinema 4d press shit+F8 to bring up the content browser. Once here you are given a wide variety of textures that you can use for free. I am showing in this frame the different hair textures, I went with bumble bee.
step 15 of 15
This is still a shot from the content browser, for the top of the podium I used this marble texture, it can be found in the section for architecture.
This is the final step, after this point you should feel free to look at different camera angles and then continue to make tweaks until you are happy with the final render.
