fantasy gardens
step 1 of 13
first i opened a new document 2000px by 2000px at 300ppi
step 2 of 13
Next i gathered the images i wanted to use
step 3 of 13
i sized the Desert image then masked the areas i didn't want and added a small gradient
step 4 of 13
then i brought in the cloud images and placed them where i wanted them and added a levels adjustment
step 5 of 13
next i extracted the arm
i used the pen tool to make my selections
step 6 of 13
then i used the same technique to extract the tree roots
step 7 of 13
moved the roots over to my working document
step 8 of 13
also move the arm into the working document.
used a layer mask to blend the roots into the arm, and used the burn and dodge tools on the arm where the roots enter it
step 9 of 13
on a new layer under the roots i used the brush tool to paint a shadow and give the impression of a hole in the ground
step 10 of 13
with the pen tool i created a curved work path then added a brush stroke to it
step 11 of 13
next i added a solid color (orange-ish) adjustment layer and changed the blend mode to soft light
step 12 of 13
then i added a glow to the arm, adjusted the levels to be a bit darker
step 13 of 13
got rid of the distracting brush stroke and added a hole in the hand using a mask and the burn and dodge tools
