My modeling done in Max 2009. Mental ray sun for light. The displacement map used on a plane for the surface and a plane with water map for water.

my rendered model was warped. The ship masked and treated to some paint brush and hue/sat adjustments. Vapor trails painted and zoom filter applied. the clouds and atmosphere was made by rendering cloud filter and warped... various blend modes to the layers used.
