A Work in Progress: Fly by Night

I started by filling in the background with a dark blue. A large basic brush was used to make the moon and a soft, large brush, the moon glow. I used a natural brush and did a light burn on the moon. I put the owl source picture as the top layer and below that, sketched out the basic shape of the owl.

I filled in the sketch and used several different layers to make the head. I smudged the colors to give them a softer look.

Using my source as a guide, I started on the wing. I used a soft brush to fill in the wing area, then used the eraser tool to make the striped feathers.

More layers, paint and smudge.

I used a very large soft brush with very low opacity to create the shadow.

I reduced the saturation and placed the moon.
