first I just put in the background and painted some black at the bottom.
step 2 of 10
I took a part from one of my sources and squished and copied it to start making the sandy ground.
step 3 of 10
continued building out the ground.
step 4 of 10
I used a hue/saturation to match the sand color better to the tone of the sky.
step 5 of 10
next I put in my turtles. Mostly with the pen and wand tool, and some slight edge feathering.
step 6 of 10
For the baby I used some layer styles to blend him in. A color overlay of a grayish brown set to the color blending mode and turned down the opacity to match the color, also a slight inner shadow, and a low opacity satin. Also I started painting shadows and highlights and things on the big turtle.
step 7 of 10
with the polygonal lasso tool I selected areas where I wanted his fins to creat shadows, then with a very large soft brush I painted right next to the area I had selected so I got this very subtle gradient effect, then erased it a bit where it gets closer to the ground. then I copied that shadow piece and flopped it around placing it in various positions that the turtle would be casting a shadow. also I roughly painted the shadow on the ground.
step 8 of 10
Nxt I started to paint in beams of light and the glow at the very top. Mainly just udes the polygonal lasso tool, selected where I wanted a beam or two, then filled with white, blurred, set to soft light, then turned down the opacity. Then when I had a nice chunk of them made, I would merge and duplicated and move the whole chunk over and shrink it a bit to get different and finer beams of light.
step 9 of 10
did the same method as the beams on light but this time filled the lasso selections with black to break up the light a bit. Also I decided to rework the ground a bit. I painted a slanty dune, then copied my sand background and created a clipping mask, then tilted it a bit to flow with the slant.
step 10 of 10
next added another dune in the foreground and put in the weeds from the las t source image. then to finish I painted in some little particles with a slight outer glow in the layer styles and it was done!
