step 1 of 8

I started by using the clone tool to make straight pieces and then the warp tool to bend them into a circle. But now that I have a circle, what do I do with it?

step 2 of 8

I suppose I could link copies of the circles together. Nice design, but what do I do with that? If I linked even more of them together, it would look like a piece of jewelry, or a net, or a shawl. Inspiration!

step 3 of 8

My lady needs to be standing on an ocean cliff, so I put two cliff images together, using the clone tool to fill in the grasses.

step 4 of 8

I drew a silhouette of the lady as a guide, but it served another purpose later. I wove the source together, making a larger piece, using the clone tool. Then I used the warp tool to make the flowing skirt.

Creation of Vigil: Step 4

step 5 of 8

I thought the skirt looked too bright, so on a whim, I reduced the opacity. I liked it. I painted on the shading using a soft brush with reduced opacity.

Creation of Vigil: Step 5

step 6 of 8

I used warp to make the bodice, sleeves and sleeve puffs and then reduced the opacity.

Creation of Vigil: Step 6

step 7 of 8

I painted in the shading on the clothing, then painted in the face and hair.

Creation of Vigil: Step 7

step 8 of 8

Finally, the shawl. I put the links together and reduced the size. I warped it and used brightness/contrast adjustment layers (light and dark) to shade it. I also used a brightness/contrast adjustment layer (dark) and a color balance adj. layer (bluish green) on the background.
