step 1 of 14

Cylinder, this is the start of the engine

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 1

step 2 of 14

Do some poly modelling to get the end in, some bevel, some extrude inner, extrude

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 2

step 3 of 14

Same thing on the back end.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 3

step 4 of 14

Add some loop cuts and grab the points and move the shape around.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 4

step 5 of 14

Continue with a little more modeling

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 5

step 6 of 14

This is how it looks now. Before hyper nurbs

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 6

step 7 of 14

After Hyper Nurbs.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 7

step 8 of 14

After a little while playing and trying new things. This is the engine. Duplicated it to make two and used a moved about swept spline to connect the two.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 8

step 9 of 14

This is the main part of the pod. It started as a cube with a bunch of extrudes, etc, then some little objects here and there building up the shape. All from my head, no reference or source.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 9

step 10 of 14

Added more detail in different forms. swept nurbs on splines or cylinders.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 10

step 11 of 14

This is some of the detail closer up. The handles were particularly fun to make.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 11

step 12 of 14

To create the effect of the engines burning I used emitters with a load of spheres flying from the back of the engines. In a textured version a pyrocluster flame effect could be added.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 12

step 13 of 14

Landscape, play with until happy.

Creation of Jet Drifter: Step 13

step 14 of 14

The emitter in the background creates the "Stars" which are a bunch of spheres really far away. The lighting is a simple daylight set-up. and done.
