Just a quick sketch (REALLY quick) to get my idea onto the canvas.
step 2 of 15
I took the spiders smile and used it to make a scales, waring and moving each new scale.
step 3 of 15
next I started using pieces of the red part of the spider to for the top of the head.
step 4 of 15
I used the smile again here, but flipped it upside down and cut part out. then I also put the eye from the spider on it and desaturated them.
step 5 of 15
Next the bottom jaw and added in the antenna. This whole time I have only been using the pen tool.
step 6 of 15
next I used one of the spiders yellow legs to make the legs of my creature. I cut and warped pieces to make them shaped as I wanted.
step 7 of 15
Next i put it back over top of the original image.
step 8 of 15
using the patch and close stamp tools I removed the spider.
step 9 of 15
next I did some blurring of the grass that is closer to the camera and the grass farther behind him to get more realistic depth of field. I also started darkening the edges a bit by painting with a big soft black brush at a low opacity.
step 10 of 15
Added the glowing antenna, then began shading the face. From here on out I mostly just painted on top of the bug with black and white to build up the depth and create highlights and shadow.
step 11 of 15
Painted highlights on the eyes and worked on the moth some.
step 12 of 15
More shading and detailing.
step 13 of 15
Shaded legs and scales
step 14 of 15
Darkened background more to make it look more like night time.
step 15 of 15
Desaturated the whole thing just a little, and painted some texturing on the face. After this just last little details and overall tweak to get the finished image!
