Source photo used for background and for star layers used as filter.
step 3 of 14
The white dove is created using brush tool and smudge tools.
step 4 of 14
Creation of robin using brush and smudge tools.
step 5 of 14
Creating chickadees using brush and smudge tools.
step 6 of 14
Creating bluebird using smudge and paint brush tools.
step 7 of 14
Here the tree is being chopped and put on a new canvas. The canvas is 9 x 16, allowing the tree to look as though it is going up high into the sky. Dodge tool is being used to bring up the whites since the photo is very dark.
step 8 of 14
Whitening is finished with dodge tool, and some color changes are made adding some blues and green to bring more life into the tree. Noise and ocean ripple filters at low setting are added to take away from the grain of the source photo, and go toward a more sparkley look.
step 9 of 14
Background sky is moved into place and manipulated so that the large star shape is placed at top of the tree.
step 10 of 14
Background is now color changed using hue/saturation tool. Some cloning is done to take out some dark streaks not wanted.
step 11 of 14
A few of the birds have been added, and cranberries are being added using the hard brush tool. Some dodging and burning will be used to help give them more shape, and some snow will be cloned on to them toward end.
step 12 of 14
Fruit is being added on a new layer using the hard brush tool. Apples are on one layer, and pears are on another layer. Pears are given noise filter. Dodge and burn tools will add shape and highlights/shadows where needed. Some pine branches will be cloned down over a few pieces of fruit.
step 13 of 14
All birds and fruit have now been added with those at top being scaled much smaller than those at bottom. This is done to give the impression that you are looking way up to see the top of the tree.
step 14 of 14
Starlike filter layer is added over entire, merged image now using the same source as the background sky. This layer is reduced about 50% in opacity first, then eraser tool set at very soft setting removes most of the layer to let tree, birds and fruit show through.
