Creation of Flame: Step 1

step 2 of 7

Put in text for the word flame. You COULD cheat it by using a flame style text I suppose, but whats the fun in that?

Use Arial BOLD.

Creation of Flame: Step 2

step 3 of 7

Place a clipping mask with a yellow and white gradient fill over the text.

Creation of Flame: Step 3

step 4 of 7

Copy the layer and place it one layer below. Use the smudge tool to push out the flames. Go out and go up. Make it look smokey.

Creation of Flame: Step 4

step 5 of 7

Make the top layer flame text fully white, copy it to a layer above. In the above layer, blur it slightly to give it a glow.

Creation of Flame: Step 5

step 6 of 7

Create a new layer under all the flames and use the brush tool with a slightly more orange hue at about40% and add some orange glow to further bring out the foreground text.

Creation of Flame: Step 6

step 7 of 7

Merge the the flame layers and resize to a proper flame size.

Using the smudge tool at about 50%, further smudge out the edges of the text. There shouldn't be any straight edges really. Going in close helps. Just zoom out every once and a while to make sure your letters are still readable!
