hi guys,

to begin with, the base image for this entry is generated using 3d software, I myself prefer rhino 3d but any application can be used (including ps) to make 3d shapes mapped with textures chopped from the source image.

Step one - make an outline of the fishbowl.

step 2 - revolve the shape around itself with smooth edges (when rendered this will solve what would have been an otherwise tricky shape to make, sketched in 2d photoshop)

step 3 - we need uneven ground for the sand, quickly shifting some control points from a the bottom piece of the sphere achieves this, an extruded circle can become the placemat.

step 4 - model in the castle, although it's not an architectural exemplar, some basic shapes extruded from the bowl base will be enough to create light and shade to the form.

step 5 - render. render the scene to a decent size and resolution from rhino, the image at this stage is fairly unimpressive but it does give us a baseline to build our ps image on.

step 6 - textures note* for this render, sand was created via the noise filter over a 50% fill in ps and colored multiply yellow over the top, the castle walls are the texture of the front cover of my sketchbook and were photographed from my phone, the timber texture was again photogrpahed by my phone looking down at my timber floor.

step 7 - chop out the whale from the source image with the pen tool and scale it over the castle walls. Also apply a hard light blue gradient where the white light is too strong around the castle.

step 8 - for water plants i photographed indoor plants with my phone at my office, crop with pen tool and place around the castle. Modify with warp transformation to vary the different plants.

step 9 - the image is slightly better balanced now with multiple plants and the whale in position.

step 10 of 13

step 10 - again, using my phone I photographed some mundane items to scatter on the bench, here a photo of my keys, cropped with pen tool and brushed at the edges fits easily over the image (note level adjustments may be needed here)

As well, to give some variation to the placemat, I have cropped and skewed the water from the source image as a soft light layer.

step 11 of 13

step 11 - photographed a wine bottle to fill the left side of the image, crop and feather to suit.

step 12 of 13

step 12 - add a blue photo filter over the bowl and dodge around the whale to bring emphasis to it.

step 13 of 13

step 13 - final image. all that is left to do now is make adjustment layers to bring emphasis to the center of the image, the ones I used were hue/saturation, levels, brightness/contrast, vibrance, all with layer masks to dictate areas of focus, as a final touch, apply a radial blur to the outer edges of the image for added effect.

cheers guys
