In CS5 I removed the ropes and stanchions from the foreground of my "camera match" source picture. The clone tool was used for this process, also I adjusted the shadows and highlights along with the overall exposure.
step 2 of 5
Imported the source into 3DS Max. The source set as background environment. The render size/resolution was set to match the dimensions of my source 1440 by 960 pxls. In front view port set the source as view able background in this view port, and turned on show safe frame. Created a camera point helper and then created and assigned 6 camera match points.
step 3 of 5
Made a plane and applied a glossy mental ray plastic material in order to generate reflections and shadows from the car model. This plane was manipulated into position to match the camera and source.
step 4 of 5
The car position on the new "floor" plane. The scene is lit with targeted spot lights colors adjusted in an attempt at matching the lighting of the photograph B/G. The ambient light was set to a blue hue also.
