Dead tree is chopped out and liquify warp tool begins to shape into the crown of thorns.
step 3 of 7
Shaped half of crown is duplicated, rotated, and scaled to form the crown. Smudge tool and eraser tool help form the thorns.
step 4 of 7
From a section of the source dead tree, the cross is formed by duplicating the piece, then joining the duplicated pieces together, merging them, then using clone tool to refine the joints. At intersection, the brush tool will draw in the ropes tying the center together.
step 5 of 7
The crown of thorns is added over the cross, erasing away the portion which would go behind the cross. To begin with, the background is made using the original source photo.
step 6 of 7
Here it was decided to change the sky to a more dramatic look. Using the beautiful photo from CGtextures, the sky became dramatic, although it will be grayed later. Trees at bottom of image were cloned into taller trees more as found in the Holy Land.
step 7 of 7
Finally, a draped cloth is added using brush tool and shaped with liquify warp tool to appear as being blown in the wind. A grayer look is accomplished with hue/saturation tool, and light changes made with filter/render/lens flare tool.
