I started to paint the couch using a chalk brush on a layer set on multiply above the gradient background layer.

the girl is painted in a similar way: different layer/multiply mode.

I decided that the couch was kinda hideous so I changed the colour and the folds.
I also added an overlay layer to the robot to make it shiny.

After I finished painting everything, I adjusted the saturation, I added a sepia photo filter, some black and white gradients set on overlay to create a vignette effect.
